Fresh concerns have emerged over the alleged lack of transparency by the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NUPEA) regarding the proposed Siaya nuclear power plant, with questions arising over the site selection process and level of public participation.
NUPEA is reportedly considering eight potential sites for the proposed project in Siaya County, including Liunda Beach, Sirongo, Ugambe, Manyuanda, Dagamoyo, Osindo, Nyangoye, and Kanyawayaga. However, the agency has not publicly confirmed a final site, prompting uncertainty among local communities.
Despite the absence of an official announcement, sources suggest that Sirongo is allegedly the preferred location. This claim is based on unverified intelligence from both local informants and other sources, pointing to increased NUPEA activity in the area since January.
There are also allegations of opaque public participation processes in Sirongo, with claims that community engagement efforts may not have been fully transparent or inclusive. These reports remain unverified and require further independent confirmation.
In Dagamoyo, residents are said to have staged a small protest opposing the proposed nuclear plant, though the demonstration reportedly received little media attention.
The proposed Siaya nuclear plant is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix and meet growing electricity demand. However, stakeholders argue that transparency, accountability, and meaningful community involvement are essential, particularly for a project of such magnitude and potential environmental impact.
NUPEA has yet to issue an official statement addressing the alleged site preference or concerns raised by local communities. Observers emphasize that clear communication will be critical in building public trust as the project progresses.
